On March 19th, at the closing ceremony of the "2023 Yabuli China Entrepreneurs Forum", Wang Shi, the 72-year-old founder of Vanke Group, said that he planned to climb Mount Everest for the third time at the age of 81, in order to continue to challenge himself and challenge the current record of the maximum age for humans to climb Mount Everest - the age of 80.

Wang Shi announces that he has climbed Mount Everest for the third time at the age of 81. Can senior citizens compete in sports like this?

Although some people have questioned whether Wang Shi can climb Mount Everest again nine years later, he believes there is no problem. Not only that, Wang Shi also confidently said, "Before the epidemic, when I was dining with Miura Kazuichiro (the world record holder who climbed Mount Everest at the age of 80) in Tokyo, he said that he still had to walk 10 kilometers every day and had sandbags strapped to his legs for training. I am not sure if he would climb Mount Everest again at the age of 90. If he succeeds in climbing it at the age of 90, then I am ready to move my plan to climb Mount Everest at the age of 81 to the age of 91."

Going to Mount Everest at the age of 80 or 90 is something that most people would not even think about. Although we still need to persist in sports as we get older, such extreme sports are obviously a bit too "competitive". Zhan Junkun, the chief physician of the Department of Geriatrics at the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, told the Global Times Health Client that according to the definition of elderly people in China, people over 60 years of age belong to the elderly, while those over 80 years of age belong to the elderly. The exercise of the elderly should be mainly based on appropriate and moderate light physical activity.

"Wang Shi wants to challenge his own spirit, which is commendable, but spirit is spirit, and medicine is medicine. We advocate that elderly people adhere to sports, but not that ordinary elderly people challenge extreme sports." Zhan Junkun explained that, first of all, personal physical conditions are different, and most elderly people do not have the physical qualities to engage in high-intensity sports. They usually do normal exercise, but if they rashly increase the intensity, it exceeds their own endurance, It's easy to cause problems. Secondly, extreme sports are far more specialized than regular exercise, and cannot be carried out without relevant knowledge reserves. Finally, extreme sports require professional teams to provide logistical support, and are not suitable for promotion to ordinary people.

The premise for persisting in sports beneficial to the body and mind is "appropriate and moderate". Zhan Junkun said that in general, the maximum amount of exercise for elderly people is when their heart rate reaches 170 minus their age. For example, the maximum heart rate of an 80 year old person during exercise should preferably not exceed 90 beats per minute, and it is recommended to exercise for half an hour every day and persist for 5 days a week to reach the standard. For the elderly, sports can choose low intensity sports such as walking, or do some housework within their capabilities. The more intense sports such as ball games, long-distance running, sprinting, and swimming are not recommended. However, for the younger elderly, as long as there are no multiple chronic diseases, there will be more sports to choose from.

1. Jog

Jogging, also known as fitness running, is a sport that is more suitable for the elderly, helping to promote blood circulation, and is very helpful in preventing cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, metabolic diseases, etc. Although jogging has a low intensity, it is important to pay attention to your own condition during exercise. If you feel any discomfort, stop immediately to avoid accidents. The exercise time should not be too long, just half an hour.

2. Tai Chi Boxing

Tai Chi Boxing is characterized by both internal and external cultivation, softness, slowness, lightness, and combination of hardness and softness. It basically does not include violent movements, which can largely avoid sports injuries such as fractures. Its requirements for exercise venues are not high, and it can even be practiced at home without being disturbed by the weather.

3. Square Dance

Square dance is suitable for elderly people with dexterous bodies and abundant physical strength. It can not only make their whole body move, but also cultivate their sentiment and make them love music and life.

4. Table Tennis

Table tennis can exercise both muscle strength and cardiorespiratory function, and it is also beneficial for enhancing physical flexibility and responsiveness.

Zhan Junkun finally reminded that before exercising, elderly people should first conduct a comprehensive assessment of their body to confirm whether there are problems with blood pressure, blood sugar, shoulder joints, and knee joints, so as to select appropriate sports. For example, elderly people with poor knee joints should try to avoid squatting and jumping sports. Be sure to remember to warm up before exercising, exercise according to your abilities, and take a timely rest and supplement nutrition after exercise. If possible, it is best to find other elderly people to exercise with each other, providing care for each other, and making it easier to persist for a long time. ▲
