Report on the impact of the epidemic on young peop

Former title: Report on the Impact of the Epidemic Situation on Young People: Big cities and big factories are no longer fragrant

Unconsciously, we have lived in the epidemic for more than two years. To varying degrees, the epidemic has left its mark on almost every ordinary person: they are used to wearing masks when going out, working at home, online classes, online interviews...

In this special period, the "epidemic imprint" broke out in a concentrated manner: people's emotions, ideas, and habits had changed significantly.

In this observation, we want to know what emotions different people have under the closure and control of the epidemic situation? What do people start to care about or not care about again?

Here are our findings.

People's emotions in containment

On social networks, people have different discussions about epidemic containment, but almost all of them expressed the same wish: "I feel uncomfortable at home", "I want to go out freely", "I want to talk to someone"...

In the long-term containment of the epidemic, anxiety (43.7%) was still the most important emotion, followed by burnout (31.3%), disappointment (29.9%) and depression (28.5%).

It is worth noting that, according to the population, different groups have different emotions affected by the closure and control of the epidemic.

1. The younger, the more boring and meaningless

In terms of age, the most important emotion of the post-85, post-90 and post-95 generation is anxiety, which is consistent with the overall situation, but the highest proportion of the post-00 generation is boredom (36.8%). An obvious trend is that the younger people are, the more "bored" and "meaningless" they feel under the control of the epidemic.

On the one hand, most young people are healthy, can use all kinds of software to grab food, and know how to get all kinds of news and epidemic trends. Therefore, young people generally control the information about the epidemic more quickly and clearly, and their anxiety is not so serious.

On the other hand, it seems that the post-00s are more unfit than the older people to "stay at home all day". Home office, online classes and staying indoors force young people to press the pause button, and all plans related to going out stop; They are busy grabbing food and paying attention to the epidemic news all day long, so that their attention is almost "deprived" by everything related to the epidemic.

2. The post-95s and post-00s were not too disappointed and depressed, but they were generally tired and numb

Another finding is that the post-95s and post-00s are not so disappointed and depressed. In contrast, they are more independent and self-centered. They do not expect too much from the outside world, so they will not be too disappointed.

However, the proportion of post-95 and post-00 people who felt "tired" and "numb" under the epidemic was higher than that of other age groups.

In the general low mood, what do people begin to care/not care about again?

1. Health and freedom have become the top priority for these young people

After the closure and control of the epidemic, people began to pay more attention to basic life and thought that health and eating well were the top priorities. While online classes at home and office and staying indoors have become the norm, people prefer to have a more stable and high-quality life at home, and they also attach great importance to freedom.

In the eyes of more than 60% of people, the importance of health has risen. Among the people infected with COVID-19, 64.8% of them value health more, while 60.2% and 42.2% of them value "freedom" and "eating well", 5.9 and 4.2 percentage points higher than the average.

This is also reflected in the things that people want to change: they want to buy more basic daily necessities, consume more conservatively, and consider indoor sports for their health and improve the quality of their homes.

In addition, young people began to reflect on whether they should change their other important life decisions. Their concerns include: whether to move, change jobs, which city to work and live in, and whether to make a will.

2. Self young people begin to care more about others - one in four people has a better relationship with strangers

In 2014, Shirley Turkle, a sociology professor at MIT, put forward the view of group loneliness: when family members are together, they are not communicating, but watching computers and mobile phones separately; The gathering of friends is not about nostalgia, but about refreshing microblog and WeChat; In class, the teacher was talking, and the students were chatting online...

However, from this survey, it seems that the epidemic is making people's relationship "return to nature".

In the ranking of importance, only about 20% (19.8%) of young people who are often considered "egotistical" believed that "themselves" were more important during the epidemic, which was far lower than "relatives" (33.7%) and "partners" (23.4%), and even lower than express delivery/delivery workers. More than 40% (40.7%) of people are considering "whether to care more about their relatives", and nearly three adults (28.3%) will reflect on "whether to be more friendly to strangers".

In terms of the relationship with people, 46.4% of the people have a better relationship with their neighbors, 30.1% have a better relationship with their parents, 28.6% have a better relationship with their friends, and 23.8% have a better relationship with strangers (such as epidemic prevention workers and takeout workers).

On Weibo and Douban, many people did not know what their neighbors did before, but the Chinese proverb "distant relatives are better than close neighbors" has been carried forward again. In addition, they care about each other with their parents and friends, which also enhances their relationship.

3. Big factories and big cities no longer attract young people

As for what has become less important during the containment period, the answer is also very direct. In these days of returning to family, life and their own small circle, more than 40% of people feel that the attraction of big cities has declined. On the whole, 31.9% of people began to waver about whether to change cities.

The attraction of large factories and companies to the post-95 and post-00 generation has declined most obviously. Two to three percent of people feel that they are less important in their hearts.

In this survey, even 13% of the post-00s feel that making money is not so important.

4. Because of the epidemic, 30% of people began to pay attention to philosophy and think about life

In addition, 30% of people began to learn philosophy.

The epidemic has given this generation a real and universal sense of "witnessing history", and has also given many people a sense of "hating less when it comes to books". They try to explain everything that happens around them through social science and historical knowledge to alleviate their anxiety. And young people's demand for knowledge is particularly strong. In the post-00s period, nearly four adults began to learn philosophy and psychology, and 30% began to learn history and sociology.

Write at the end

The undeniable fact is that the closure of the epidemic has brought many negative effects on people's mood and life, and people's anxiety, risk and uncertainty in life are increasing.

Therefore, the closure and control of the epidemic situation has made people's life concepts and consumption habits tend to be conservative in general: they care about ordinary life, pay attention to people around them, pay more attention to saving in consumption, and strive to "save themselves" through learning philosophy and social science knowledge in daily life.

On the other hand, Zhang Chun, a psychological consultant and writer, believes that the epidemic is a new problem that people are facing, but the uncertainty brought about by the epidemic is an ancient and long-term problem: we are suffering together, and this suffering should not be completely affected by a single emotion, and our reason and judgment should be consumed in vain.
